According to the manufacturer, MER401-30 does not have a check valve. If you have the MEGR-253 regulator, and you follow the correct procedure, it will not allow gas to leak out when the hose is disconnected. When you start out with two full tanks with both tank valves open, the side the selector is pointed to is the primary side. After the primary tank is empty, the indicator will change to red. Switch the selector to the reserve tank, and the indicator will turn back to green; the full tank is now the primary one. At that point, you can close the valve on the empty tank and disconnect it to replace it or take it to be filled; the regulator will not allow gas to leak out while the tank is disconnected. When you reconnect the full tank, open the valve; it is now the reserve tank. Just reverse the process as each tank runs empty.
