It is very important that you also go based on the GTW (gross trailer weight), you do not want to go over the max rated trailer weight and that includes everything added to the trailer, not an empty trailer. It is suggested to go with a weight distribution hitch that is closest to the GTW and tongue weight of your trailer, the hitch needs to be rated higher than the GTW and tongue weight of trailer. You don't have to but it is recommended, except with equalizer hitches they are set up so that you just need to have one that is rated for more than the GTW and tongue weight of your trailer. Hope this helps you decide on a weight distribution hitch that is best for your needs. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
