According to the manufacturer, the best way to determine which regulator to use is to add up the maximum BTU/hr ratings of all the appliances, and make sure the reserve mode flow rating of the regulator is more than the total. The standard MEGR-253 covers most RV’s, based on the appliances they have. The MEGR-253L is used mostly on smaller units with a few small appliances. The MEGR-253H is used mostly for large units with multiple appliances, which may include tankless water heaters, generators, etc. It all depends on the potential flow demand of the overall system, based on the combined maximum BTU/hr ratings of all the appliances.
