Turn the water heater OFF and unplug the power cord. Keep in mind that there still might be some hot water inside the unit. If the unit was operating and before draining, wait for a while until the hot water cools down. After the water pressure has been lowered, disconnect the outlet and inlet water pipes and put the bucket underneath to collect the remaining water. Some manufacturers recommend using the air compressor, blow short bursts of air through the inlet connection to make sure there is no water left inside the heater.
